Rectangular double looped buckles were in use from as early as 13^th century.  However, the number of buckles found during the Medieval period is fairly limited. Excavations suggest that this buckle type was most popular during the 16^th and 17^th centuries during the Stuart and Elizabethan era.  Smaller size rectangular buckles continued to be popular on shoes, bags, pouches and other accoutrements into the Napoleonic/Georgian and Victorian era.
